March 1998

Started the pond

April 1998

All month - setting the stones around the edge

May 1998

9    Sarasa Comet attempting to mate with Shubunkin late at night
10    A female Shubunkin died - exhausted from mating !
23    A Diamond Mirror Carp died from "Cotton wool fungus"

June 1998

5    Sturgeons missing - presumed caught by cats
6    Completed the edging of the pond
7    Saw 3 tiny fish in the pond - this is the first time I'd seen any fry.
8    Fish mating again
21   Saw a fish hatch from an egg !
27   Moved some fry to the reserve tank
28    Bought 2 sterlettes - Dr Benson & Dr Carter.

July 1998

5    Cannot see the Sturgeons - clearly they are easy prey for cats so I'll never buy any more.
8    Fish mating again !

August 1998

23    Bought 2x Ghost Koi & 1x Sarasa Comet
31    Mike & Beth brought round Big Betty, a "Pond-Fill Refugee"

September 1998

1    Finally managed to get some fish to eat from my hand.
10   Spotted a new fish.  Proportionally, it's longer than the other baby fish and very pale.  Just over an inch long.
19    Ghost Koi No 2 found to have "fin rot".  Placed the fish in the Isolation Tank and used the Pond Cure stuff.
23    Ghost Koi No 1 died - "fin rot".

October 1998

9    Simon's Pond Page published on the internet
11    Fish mating again - isn't it a bit unusual for them to be doing this so late in the year?
18    Gutso wounded - a cut down her side.  Appeared to recover.
20    Most of the fish appear dormant - resting on the silt motionless.   Apparently this is normal during cold spells.  Most plants are now dying.
23    Gutso died from a fungal infection from her wound (tried the usual chemical treatment in an isolation tank).  See Tips and learn from my mistakes.

November 1998

Cold weather - fish dormant
Switched the pump off

February 1999

12    Saw a frog for the first time in months - it must be hibernating somewhere nearby.

March 1999

14  Frogs everywhere
21  1st frog spawn
22 More frog spawn - now 4 clumps !  The frogs will come right up to me if I make a croaking sound - I presume it's because they think I'm some kind of big female frog !   I can hear the frogs croaking all night!
31 After 10 days there are signs that the frog spawn is growing

April 1999

2  Added stones around the edges & a shower for the birds.
4  Tadpoles hatched after 2 weeks
5  Bought 3x Ghost Carp

May 1999

1  Virtually all the tadpoles had been eaten by the fish
22  Finally managed to get the Blue Orfes to take food from my hand.  A victory because these are very shy fish!

June 1999

25  The goldfish were mating.
26  Found eggs near surface,  Note this happened weeks earlier last year.

July 1999

3  Saw a dozen small fry that can't be more than a day or two old.
12  Bought 2x Plecostomus about 2 inches long. (Bad idea!)

August 1999

1  Scary has some kind of fungus on gill - applied treatment.

September 1999

23  Despite treatment the fungus remains.
25  Bought 3x Ghost koi (2x silver, 1x yellow/gold).

November 1999

The fish have lost their appetite at last!

February 2000

10    Saw the first frogs - they appeared on the 12th last year - what a coincidence!

March 2000

9    1st frogspawn.
25    Tadpoles beginning to wriggle inside frogspawn.
30 Tadpoles hatched after nearly 3 weeks.

April 2000

Virtually all tadpoles in pond have been eaten by the fish.

May 2000

28  Received 4x Smooth Newts from Cath & Dave's pond in Barnsley.

June 2000

10  Fish mating.  Female goldfish, male goldfish (Joe55) and Sarasa Comet (Angel.)  This was after an unusually warm day.
13  Saw tiny fry - it only took 3 days for the eggs to hatch in this hot weather.
27 Fish breeding again !

July 2000

1  Bought 3xkoi
2  Saw some tiny newts
